Andy Joule is a film-maker and animator. His interest is in the movement of light and capturing the moments where we have been, but where we remain unseen. From a background in stopmotion where this process of capturing movement a frame at a time shows what the animator has done, without revealing the act itself Joule has taken this approach into the world of timelapse photography and After Effects post-production. A sense of narrative, a device not usually resonant within this method of production, is an important departure. His latest film 'ellipsis' (produced in 2011) is the first step in this direction.
Joule studied on the prestigious animation course at West Surrey College of Art & Design. After graduating he went on to work in London for 3 Peach working alongside Joan Ashworth & Andy Staveley. He then proceeded to work for most of the leading studios in London through the 1990s. Joule then went on to work in Manchester for HOT animation and Cosgrove Hall, where he directed, as well in Bristol with Barry Purves, the Netherlands and the US with animation great Don Bluth. His professional work has always been in the medium of stop-motion which is in contrast to his own films.
In addition to his practical work Joule has also lectured at Volda University College, Norway and is a Senior Lecturer in Animation at the University for the Creative Arts. He is also a member of the Society of Animation Studies and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
